Unfortunately, the owner of the nightclub passed on last fall and his children decided to sell the place. The City of Fredericton decided to purchase the lot and building for $500 000. The decisions to invest this kind of money into this property were the usual return on investment and to enhance this part of our city, which is considered to many an eye sore.
There was another alleged reason behind this decision also. There was documented evidence that alleged that a biker group associated with the Hell’s Angels were interested in purchasing the local bar. This claim has been refuted by a local member of one of the oldest motorcycle groups in Canada called the Bacchus.
With this in mind, it was reported that in the past year, there were members of the Hell’s Angels that did stop by and party it up a bit. There were no reported illegal incidents that evening and there was an extra police presence felt. It should be noted that the officers would have been taken away from our downtown core where the majority of the bars are in Fredericton, where it is also reported that there are fights, drugs and vandalism on a weekly basis. This is not caused by a motorcycle gang but normal citizens that during the day are considered pillars of our community.
In taking a closer look at the Biker Groups that drew the extra police presence that evening, you will find human beings that believe in family, loyalty and giving back to the community. This is well documented in the following:
1) The countless of dollars and time spent fundraising each year for the Toys for Tots Campaign. You will see these burly bikers with toys on the back of their motorcycles for local sick children.
2) In Laconia, New Hampshire, there was a cheque for $5000.00 raised during a Salvation Shelter Run and the only reason given for this was, “Because we were asked.”
3) The Tucson Chapter participates in the “Catch a Dream” Campaign for terminally ill children at $20.00 per rider and the reason behind that is simple. “It’s for the Kids”
4) Locally, when a citizen of New Brunswick had passed away, they arrived to just pay respects and to make sure the remaining members of the family were supported in such a difficult time.
So in taking this closer look, these citizens that we consider frightening or bad, are really no different than other members of our community just a lot more giving.
While this writer is not defending the documented actions of illegal activity that select few within these groups are involved in, it is being pointed out that what they are being accused of happens everyday with other members of society. We forgive and do not follow those individuals like we do this motorcycle club.
It also should be pointed out that these “Barbarians” were intelligent enough not to want to invest in this property, unlike our city council. Also, pointed out by a member of this motorcycle gang was that this decision would only drive up the property tax in this part of the city, where the majority of citizens would not be able to afford this increase.
From the outside looking in, the city council is using many “smoke and mirror” excuses to over pay for a property that in this writer’s view will only put more pressure on the lower income families in this community.
Who really was thinking of the people in this decision?
